[sticky entry] Sticky: Askbox

thedarlingone: text reads "I don't want logic, I want a half brick!" (half brick)
So this sticky entry serves the function of a tumblr askbox. Comments are screened (invisible to everyone but me and the person who posted the comment). Let me know if you want your "ask" to be answered privately or publicly. If publicly, I'll make a post and link you to the post in a reply to your comment; if privately, I'll just answer the comment, and my answer will also be screened so only you and I can see it.

(For some reason dropping questions/comments in an askbox feels a lot less... socially intrusive than sending a message. I have absolutely no idea why.)

[sticky entry] Sticky: give me art prompts

So! As so often happens, I am once again trying to practice drawing. I have pencils and a sketchbook. What I would like is PROMPTS. I'm putting this here as Dreamwidth is my most stable platform for linking things, but I'll be signal boosting it on Tumblr and on my current fandom's Discord. Feel free to signal boost anywhere else if you know people who might be interested.

The basics: I'd like fanart prompts for my current fandom, which is the Star Wars Legends X-wing / Rogue Squadron books and comics. Any scene from canon or fic (yours or someone else's), or just a basic prompt. I have a big post of prompts here if you're not feeling inspired.

Where to request: Comment here or on my sticky askbox post, or send me a tumblr ask, or just toss a request at me in the Discord and I'll make a note.

The limitations: Fab Four (Wedge, Tycho, Wes, Hobbie) preferred, now that I have my photo references for all of them sorted out. I'll also try OT Big Three (Luke, Leia, Han), since I know we have some Luke/Wedge shippers in here, but I don't want to get too scattered, so I'll keep it to those seven characters for now. No guarantees on quality or timeframe, but you probably knew that. ;-) This will probably be just pencil sketches for now, I tend to get overwhelmed when I add color media. And I'm gonna say no NSFW for now.

Other notes: Modern AU is fine - pretty much any AU is fine really, I have lots of reference for clothing from all eras and I could use the practice drawing it. Kisses and complicated poses are fine, but keep in mind I never have figured out drawing three-quarter view. On the other hand, I really would prefer requests of a specific scene / moment from a fic or from canon, because then I already have it pictured in my head and I don't have to make as many decisions. (Unpublished / unwritten fic is fine if you can describe the scene or give me a snippet.)

okay, where did I leave off... right, Big Band Hits of the '30s, for which Sovay has helped me identify the correct artist but I do not have the energy right now to match instrumental tracks by ear. I can tackle that at some other point.

I think I'll call it there at least for a bit. I'm having a very low energy day.

Having spent the evening working on a rag rug for my floor (braiding it is quick and fun, sewing it up takes for fucking ever), let's try a little more in the way of music.

I think I'm going to call that a night. I'm under 105 hours left to review, that's some sort of progress.
thedarlingone: Silver from Sapphire & Steel captioned "your shininess is noted" (your shininess is noted)
Okay, let's see if I can get slightly further into the letter A. (I should probably be tagging these posts or something but I'll worry about that later. Titling them's a start, anyway.)

I'm going to cut it there because I have an appointment soon. I'm down to 105 hours left (I went through last night and removed a bunch of duplicated files where some albums had gotten double copied for some reason; there are a bunch more duplicates and files I need to compare to find out whether they're different, so the number will probably keep going down faster than I actually listen through everything).
thedarlingone: Jack O'Neill very grubby captioned "passin out again brb" (passin out again)
I have over 2100 music files in my VLC. Some of them are duplicates, but given that I got through significantly less than 20 in the previous post, we're going to be here a while. This is why I've never gotten all the way through reviewing my music collection.

I think I'm going to call it for the night, looking down the list isn't a ton of stuff I'm excited about for a ways and my earbuds are going to die soon. We're down to about 116 hours left, that's progress of a sort? Jesus. How do I have so much music.

(And then VQ recommended I should check out Hozier and Orville Peck as being similar to artists I enjoy, and Leia sent me a bunch of Orville Peck links and I got distracted listening to those, so I'll cut this post here and probably continue later. So far my opinion there is Orville Peck has a very articulate voice that's easy to understand without having to read the lyrics along, which is an important starting point for me.)

MY MUSIC

IT IS BACK

*ahem*

guess who finally retrieved all my old music backups off my old laptop after almost two full years without most of it

i now have over 8GB of music on my phone's SD card and need to sort through it

this is a struggle as you might imagine because my auditory processing is very limited (for instance in the animal crossings the only way i can really tell one kk slider song from another is if i have gyroids dancing to it, the visual representation of the beat actually helps me follow the sounds better) and i burn out very fast

so i am thinking. that i might write down my opinion of each song here on my blog. some of these i don't really even remember why i have them. so it's like, *basically* i am going for three categories: songs for phone (I don't do a lot in the way of playlists so this is songs I am generally happy to have come up on shuffle at any time), songs for computer (I like having them available but for instance I am at many times not in the mood for the Ballad of Ira Hayes), songs to delete (I am generally very hesitant to delete anything, especially because I know I may feel very differently about a song when I'm in a different mood, so this is hard and I usually wind up with folders of songs I don't really *want* but have not committed to deleting).

Book Meme from [personal profile] teratornis
1: Grab the nearest book.
2: Turn to page 126.
3: The 6th full sentence is your life in 2026.

I only have a couple of physical books in my room right now and the closest one was the knitting pattern book that serves as my mousepad support, so the sentence in question is "Alternatively, work them in a row on a simple background as on design no. 155 (Blue and White Pots) on page 65."

Honestly, if my bad shoulder will un-jank enough that I can knit more in 2026, that's a pretty good omen.

Streaming more Jedi: Fallen Order! I've installed a modpack for "potato" PCs, so hopefully the combat will feel less laggy.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge is live! Day 1 prompt is: "The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it."

Uh. I haven't really done an intro post in so long. I'm JT -- justiceturtle on Discord and YouTube, maryellencarter on Tumblr, thedarlingone here and AO3. I write fanfic with my life partner and co-author Leia, camshaft22 on AO3 and Tumblr, the-dour-one here (we decided to coordinate the usernames and then failed to coordinate the hyphenation).

We mostly write in the Star Wars Legends X-wing fandom, more briefly described as Rebel pilotfic; we're currently posting a longfic (171k, finished, updates Sundays and Thursdays) fusing the sequel trilogy with elements from the X-wing books. Our backlog also features several longfics from Lupin III fandom, but I had a very bad time with the people there and have no plans to go back. I've also been streaming a wide assortment of video games semi-irregularly on YouTube.

As far what I'm hoping to get from doing the challenge, mostly just trying to get in the habit of posting here. I've been linking my streams but not really posting otherwise much, since I don't feel like I often have much to say. I probably won't be linking my posts on the Snowflake Challenge comm, just because I don't especially feel like it? Happy to hear from any of y'all though.

Final (probably) haul from the Steam Winter Sale: Portal, Fallout New Vegas (bundle with all DLC), Hades, Powerwash Simulator (downloaded all free DLC). What an assortment. No wonder Steam is struggling to figure out my taste in games.

(I also have about $18 of gift card value left sitting on my Steam account to be used next time there's a game I want on sale. Hades and Powerwash Simulator both have newish sequels that are still over $20, so I might pick up one of those sequels eventually. Or something completely different!)

I hope everybody is having a satisfactory winter holiday season. If I do not pass out from the sleep deprivation (unfortunately not from fun things, one of my housemates is being troublesomely loud at stupid hours), I plan to probably stream my first try at Hades around 2pm or 3pm Eastern US time today.

* Could not get Assassin's Creed 2 to work, as the Ubisoft launcher demanded a CD key that Steam did not have in evidence. Also it does not seem to support controller and I did not feel like trying to parkour on keyboard and mouse. Refunded.

* Enjoyed my first hour or so of Fallout New Vegas vastly more than Skyrim; it's built on the same engine, but the lighting is significantly better, the movement feels less clunky, the combat has a semi-paused option, and frankly I'm a lot more comfortable in a postapocalyptic Southwestern version of the 1950s than in yet another Tolkien knockoff. Also I *may* have figured out how to view my map and inventory? Unsure. I accidentally bought the version that doesn't include $20 worth of DLC for $2.50, and there doesn't seem to be an upgrade option, so I have requested an exchange on that, but I expect to keep it around and fiddle with it off and on.

* Then I tried out the demo for Powerwash Simulator. I've been hesitant to drop $12.50 on sale for a single game (I mean, I can afford it because I've refunded so many games I still have most of that gift card; I think the only game I've actually kept so far was Portal and that was $2), but I just spent most of two hours in the first level and a quarter, so it seems very good value for the money. It's soothing, unhurried, and you can't take fall damage when you accidentally walk off a roof, plus there's even a bunch of free DLC.

extremely brief video game reviews:

* skyrim is impressively dogshit. maybe it was good in 2011? idk man i had never played a video game in my life as of 2011. i played an hour of skyrim and did not enjoy any aspect of it. refunded.

* slime rancher is a game with an extremely cute artstyle, i played a bit of the demo. i do not enjoy the sorts of games where you have to manage resources in order to keep your animals happy and producing more resources. if you do enjoy that sort of game, check out the slime rancher demo on steam.

* i did about fifteen minutes of trying to parry in elden ring, could not get it, and decided i will refund that game also and pick it up again in a few years when it's cheaper and i have considerably more controller muscle memory.

* then i booted up boyfriend dungeon and spent like four hours there. that is such a moreish game. you date were-weapons, do little multiple-choice conversations with them as per standard dating sim convention, take their weapon forms into a roguelite dungeon crawler to level up your relationship, go on more dates and repeat. i did Not expect to enjoy something where the combat genre name involves the words "realtime bullet hell" but i'm actively loving it and apparently fairly good at it? like i am actively planning to buy another game in the same combat genre (hades, currently $7.50 on sale) as soon as the skyrim refund clears.

next plans: probably won't be streaming again till after christmas, probably pick up jedi fallen order again at that time. i'm still having a shitton of fun hanging out with friends in stream chat and will be delighted if any of y'all happen to show up as well (that's why i keep posting the links)

As people have probably noticed, I have been playing a bunch of video games since the Steam Winter Sale started, trying to figure out which ones I'm enjoying. (A friend gave me a gift card, which is allowing me to try out considerably more different games than I could wisely afford on my own.) Of course, I have trouble telling whether I'm enjoying things even when I'm actually doing them, so I am attempting to lay out some thoughts.

on games I have recently streamed )

And then, especially since I am attempting to figure out whether to refund Elden Ring and have some $40 available to spend on other Steam games, I am also wishing to lay out my thoughts on some games I haven't yet streamed and in some cases haven't yet bought:

under here )

That's not nearly all the games on my Steam wishlist, but it's nearly half past three in the morning and it's the ones I mainly wanted to think out my thinky thoughts about. Hopefully I haven't hit some kind of character limit.
